Zycko: LSI breaks 1m IOPS benchmark
LSI claims to have broken the benchmark of a million input-output operations per second, or IOPS, for a single server running 6 Gbps server-attached storage (SAS).
The company is now looking to the implications of its benchmarking success for direct-attached storage (DAS) in order to facilitate scalability within data centres for companies with fast-growing storage demands.
Steve Fingerhut, senior director of marketing at LSI's storage components division, says that LSI is building on its existing 3 Gbps SAS portfolio to establish new options for companies putting 6 Gbps infrastructure in place.
He adds: "We believe 6 Gbps SAS will extend the market opportunity for DAS in the data centre."
Meanwhile, Dave Reinsel, group vice-president of storage and semiconductor research at analyst IDC, suggests that the IOPS figure is a predictor of improved energy efficiency and lower costs for future network infrastructures built around similar technology.
LSI was recently praised for its innovative approach to storage networking with a listing as a finalist in Storage Networking World's spring 2009 awards in the category of Selecting and Deploying Storage Networks.
